The Breakout Year for AI Agents?
The time of AI Agents is now… but let’s talk about what they actually are first and why they’re considered an emerging technology.
AI Agents are simply a class of artificial intelligence designed to perform automated tasks without human intervention. Some agents are designed to do very specific tasks or make decisions based off a fixed rule set. However, we’re moving towards AI Agents that are capable of operating without any human intervention, making their own decisions through continuous learning.
Early Usage
The foundational concept of Agentic AI (or what AI Agents were referred to before) has been explored as early as the 1990s, with early work in reinforcement learning and autonomous systems culminating in IBM’s Deep Blue, the first computer to win a chess match against a chest world champion.
While Deep Blue was proof that AI agents could work in a confined domain, it wasn’t until the mid-2010s that they started seeing more widespread use in industries such as robotics. In fact, it coincides with the rise of generative AI like OpenAI’s GPT models because those are, in a way, AI Agents that utilize machine learning and data sets to make decisions on what to write/generate.
Modern Breakthroughs and Web3
Technology evolves extremely quickly, and this most certainly included AI. Huge strides were made in the realm of deep learning, reinforcement learning, and neural networks that allowed AI Agents to make decisions without needing much human guidance. This has proven useful in more industries like the automotive industry (with self-driving cars), healthcare, and even finance (through predictive analytics and algorithmic trading).
This also coincides with the emergence of AI Agents in the Web3 world, where they gained major traction in the past 3–5 years. And now, AutoLayer is in the midst of the AI Agent revolution — becoming a marketplace for hundreds of AI Agents and even developing its own in AUTO. Soon enough, AutoLayer will also have a framework with which users can create their own AI Agents.
2025 is the breakout year. The time for AI Agents is now, and we’re so glad to have you join us.
